Wedding Crashers

Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are an unbeatable combination as two Washington DC lawyers who get their kicks, and their girls, by crashing weddings. Displaying talent, wit, intelligence, and ample charm, the pair seldom fails at their mutual mission of seduction. But eventually they get bored with the routine. Everything explodes when they crash an upper-crust wedding given by US Senator William Cleary (Christopher Walken). Jeremy (Vaughn) makes the ostensible mistake of seducing Cleary's sexually ravenous daughter Gloria (Isla Fisher) and John (Wilson) falls head over heels for the beautiful, slightly sarcastic older sister, Claire (Rachel McAdams). But Claire is nearly engaged to a slimy, macho, ivy-league snob played with beady-eyed gusto by ALIAS's Bradley Cooper. The boys get lured away on a weekend trip to the Cleary's estate, which is when the film begins to resemble an early 1930s pre-code comedy with its innuendo-filled banter, eccentric grandmothers, suspicious rivals, and copious bed-hopping.Vaughn's motor-mouth aggression plays off Wilson's irresistible sensitivity (and vice versa) to such perfection that they leave other contemporary romantic comedy teams in the dust. They manage to get plenty of laughs and warmth from their believably close male friendship without resorting to any clichAAcd homoerotic references. Their respective love interests are also outstanding, particularly McAdams who displays extraordinary wit and presence in addition to her stunning beauty. Walken is surprisingly low-key as the senator, tuning his usual craziness down to a few tensile stares. Seventies mini-series staple Jane Seymour is memorable as the senator's sex-starved, boozed-up wife, who makes a play for John. Reviews Premiere 02/01/2006 "Scene-for-scene, this was last year's funniest movie....The funny here is all in the journey..."Uncut 01/01/2006 "The comedy's both astute and bawdy..."Rolling Stone 07/28/2005 "It's the anything-goes sass that crashes CRASHERS into the level of comic nirvana....McAdams is a showstopping beauty with the talent to bend a laugh line to her will."New York Times 07/15/2005 "[A]miably raunchy....[Mr. Wilson] has carved out a singular movie niche as our reigning dude, the quintessential American guy..."Entertainment Weekly 07/22/2005 "[A] funny, ungirdled romp....Garrulous Vaughn makes expert use of his off-the-cuff, chow-it-down, guy-to-guy solidity..." Katie Tippel

Paul Verhoeven (SHOWGIRLS) directed this film, a moving period drama, before he relocated to Hollywood. A true story set in 19th century Holland, Keetje Tippel is a young girl born into poverty whose mother takes her to work in a brothel. As men use her, so too, Katie decides, she can use them to obtain the social status she seeks. When she becomes the mistress of a young banker (Hauer), Keetje finds a foothold in the Dutch upper-class and uses it to wed one of the banker's wealthy friends. Once again, Verhoeven has crafted a riveting film where female sexuality is a weapon to be honed and used cunningly, as in BASIC INSTINCT, resulting in an erotic, yet disturbing, drama that takes a dim view of capitalism and male dominated societies.

Horror of Frankenstein

Coming at the tail end of Hammer Studios' Frankestein cycle (it was preceeded by the classic CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN, and FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED), HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN takes the familiar story in a much different direction than its predecessors. The film finds young Victor Frankenstein (Bates) becoming fed up with his boorish father and his boring classes. Longing to escape to Vienna to experiment in his lab, Victor offs his father and quits school. Soon Victor has successfully re-animated a turtle and begins work on his ultimate creation--a human made out of dead body parts. Taking place in a vaguely mod-ish 18th century where the characters carry on as if they were London during the swingin' 1960s, HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN has its tongue planted firmly in cheek.

Cecil B. Demented

John Waters follows 1998's benevolently vulgar PECKER with this reactionary story of another young artist. Cecil (Stephen Dorff) is a radical young (and arguably insane) filmmaker whose motive for creating his art stems from a violent dissatisfaction with the pandering product produced by Hollywood. Cecil and his gang of film terrorists, the Sprocket Holes (who each has a tattoo of the name of their favorite director), kidnap spoiled superstar Honey Whitlock (Melanie Griffith) at the Baltimore premiere of her new film with the intention of forcing her to star in their antistudio opus RAVING BEAUTY. When Honey sees the street credibility she gets from her association with Cecil's terrorist antics, however, she no longer has to be forced to participate in the Sprocket Holes' outlandish schemes. Less polished than some of his previous works (SERIAL MOM, CRY-BABY) but not nearly as crude as his reputation-earning early films, DEMENTED fits somewhere in the middle of Waters's ouevre. With an anything-goes spirit that one can rarely find outside of Waters's gleeful taboo-breaking creations, DEMENTED allows true lovers of cinema to live vicariously through characters who are desperately trying to remedy the sad state of the medium at the turn of the 21st century.

Tim Burton's Corpse Bride (W/S)

In the same vein as EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, Tim Burton continues to combine wholesome comedy and creepy horror with this tale of a mild-mannered Victorian gentleman, Victor (Johnny Depp), who accidentally marries a mysterious corpse bride (Helena Bonham-Carter) instead of his intended, Victoria (Emily Watson). Victor soon discovers that the Land of the Dead holds more fun than frights and begins to fall in love with his innocent bride. Meanwhile, Victoria has been drawn into a scam of a marriage and may not escape with her life. As time runs out for everyone, can there be a resolution where everyone gets what he or she deserves? Building on their past productive relationship (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, ED WOOD), Tim Burton and Johnny Depp create a colorful riot of a film that revives the increasingly rare method of stop-motion animation. Over the period of 10 years that Burton worked to complete the film, new techniques were created to speed the process, including a new way to change the character models' facial expressions by using gears in their heads. Of particular note is the lilting score by Danny Elfman, another longtime Burton collaborator. Fun for adults and children, CORPSE BRIDE is another welcome walk through Tim Burton's twisted mind.

However, when the police cannot find the killer, Franco and his wife decide to take the investigation into their own hands and stumble upon a troubling conspiracy. Atmospheric and evocative, WHO SAW HER DIE? borrows elements from Nicolas Roeg's masterful DON'T LOOK NOW and grafts them with the conventions of the giallo, creating a film that is, at once, haunting, suspenseful, and disturbing.

Ring Of Fire - The Emile Griffith Story

Although its subject is an infamous boxer, RING OF FIRE: THE EMILE GRIFFITH STORY tells the a tale that centers on such human emotions as rage, regret, and forgiveness. This documentary is constructed through interviews with Griffith himself and others who experienced the film's events, as well as file footage of Griffith's public appearances and fights. Griffith was a native of the Virgin Islands who moved to New York in the 1950s and became one of the dominant middleweight boxers during the early 1960s. The entire time, however, Griffith struggled to hide his homosexuality, a knee-jerk reaction that still made him close-mouthed about it years later. The most famous moments of Griffith's career came when his career and his personal life collided in a tragic way during his well-known series of fights against Benny "the Kid" Paret. The third and final time they fought, Griffith beat Paret so badly that the latter died 10 days later, and Griffith's rage was reportedly fueled by a homosexual slur Paret repeatedly insulted him with. RING OF FIRE concentrates on the Paret fight, how it affected Griffith, and what it reveals about society and the culture of sports during the period.

The Kid & I (2005)

An offbeat piece of real-life wish-fulfillment, THE KID & I stars Tom Arnold as Bill Williams, a down-and-out actor who, just like Arnold himself, had his greatest screen success opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in TRUE LIES. Just as Williams is about to kill himself, he gets the offer to write and star in an action film in which he will be teamed with hardcore TRUE LIES fan Aaron Roman (Eric Gores, Arnold?Ts real-life neighbor), the cerebral palsy-stricken son of multimillionaire Davis Roman (Joe Mantegna). In a slightly cracked mirror version of the film?Ts behind-the-scenes true story, Williams reluctantly agrees to the offer, only to find himself transformed by his young costar?Ts indomitable spirit.

As with reality TV, THE KID & I could almost be marketed as a documentary. Star Gore?Ts wealthy father did commission neighbor Arnold to pen THE KID & I for his TRUE LIES-loving son, director Penelope Spheeris (WAYNE?TS WORLD) appears as herself, and we even get to see some home movie footage of Gore as a child. But the result, which could have been cloying or exploitative, is an unusual family-friendly satire of Hollywood that doesn?Tt shy away from a little darkness when necessary. Gore--who really does suffer from cerebral palsy--is a winning presence, game for anything and with sharp comic timing. And though one could go crazy trying to figure out where Bill Williams ends and Tom Arnold begins, his patented manic self-deprecation is appealing and he has a great foil in veteran character actor Richard Edson.

The Departed W/S

Director Martin Scorsese returns to his trademark style with the violent, bruised, and bloody feature THE DEPARTED. Scorsese filched the basic storyline from Wai Keung Lau and Siu Fai Mak's masterful 2002 Hong Kong action film, INFERNAL AFFAIRS, which saw a policeman going undercover as a mob member and a mob member infiltrating the police force. Scorsese transfers the action to Boston, positioning Leonardo Di Caprio as undercover cop William Costigan and Matt Damon as undercover mobster Colin Sullivan. While Costigan and Sullivan get into plenty of nail-biting situations that almost reveal their true identities, Scorsese gradually unravels his strong supporting cast, including Jack Nicholson as Sullivan's mob boss, Frank Costello; Ray Winstone as Costello's meat-headed muscle; Mark Wahlberg as a hot-headed police sergeant; and Vera Farmiga as a love interest for both Damon and DiCaprio's characters.

THE DEPARTED finds Scorsese generously dipping his toes back into waters that will be warmly familiar to his biggest fans. Rolling Stones songs pepper the soundtrack, recalling the remarkable "Jumpin' Jack Flash" sequence in MEAN STREETS; bullets and blood punctuate every key scene, bringing TAXI DRIVER's explosive finale to mind; and the mobster-themed storyline is a thrilling return to GOODFELLAS territory. Nicholson and Winstone provide acting master-classes every time they appear, neatly complementing the blossoming talents of DiCaprio, Damon, and Wahlberg, while further veteran support comes in small roles for Martin Sheen and Alec Baldwin. Scorsese is often criticized for affording precious little screen time to female characters, and THE DEPARTED won't quell those dissenting voices, although Farmiga's character proves to be more than a match for DiCaprio and Damon's posturings. But Scorsese followers who balked at his diversions into documentary filmmaking (NO DIRECTION HOME) and period epics (THE AVIATOR) will be delighted to find raw male machismo puncturing the screen once again in this frenetic entry into his celebrated oeuvre.

Brokeback Mountain (2005) F/S

Based on the short story by Pulitzer Prize-winning author E. Annie Proulx, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN is the tragic and moving story of two cowboys who unexpectedly fall in love while working together one summer in 1963. When the film begins, rodeo cowboy Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and ranch-hand Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) are strangers meeting for the first time. As the more outgoing one, it is Jack who must initiate a friendship with Ennis, a man so tight-lipped and self-consciously macho he refuses all facial expression. From this strained beginning, Jack and Ennis gradually begin to bond on cold, lonely nights over a fire in the mountains of Signal, Wyoming. One particularly chilly evening, Jack invites Ennis into his tent, where a sudden awkward embrace sends their relationship in a new direction. Though each man stubbornly defends his heterosexuality, the spark between them cannot help but grow, with that initial summer on Brokeback Mountain becoming their reference point for happiness during the rest of their lives.

Spanning 20 years, the film moves at an impressively slow pace that really captures the detailed and unhurried style of Proulx's story. Seeing each other a few times a year at best, Ennis and Jack spend the rest of their time halfheartedly living up to society's expectations by marrying and having kids. When the lovers do meet, there is a sense of love so palpable and frustrating it often manifests itself in physical violence. Gyllenhaal shines as the film's hopeful light, and Ledger gives a powerful performance as the emotionally blocked Ennis. Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee captures the natural beauty of Wyoming and Texas with camerawork that, while beautiful, never feels imposing. Gustavo Santaolalla's simple yet haunting score helps to complete a beautiful portrait of regret and wasted chances.

The Polar Express W/S

Director Robert Zemeckis revolutionized the art of animated film in 1998's WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT by dropping cartoon characters into the same frame with flesh-and-blood actors. In THE POLAR EXPRESS, live action and animation have merged seamlessly, resulting in sparkling super-realism. A landmark technique Zemeckis and his Sony Pictures Imageworks team call "Performance Capture" perfectly suits the tenor of this wondrous children's Christmas story by Chris Van Allsburg. A disillusioned little boy, just old enough to doubt the existence of Santa Claus, has the adventure of a lifetime one fateful Christmas Eve. Clad in his pajamas, he climbs aboard a magic train to the North Pole, driven by a kindly train conductor (voiced by Tom Hanks who starred in both of Zemeckis's Academy-Award winning films FORREST GUMP and CASTAWAY). Among myriad jaw-dropping moments, the train plummets brakeless through crystalline mountains in a simulated roller coaster ride. Going off the rails, skidding sideways, and snaking violently across a frozen lake, the train arrives at the North Pole (a vast, glowing city of brick buildings). At that moment, the car carrying the kids detaches and they're sent tumbling down never-ending chutes and slides until they land in the middle of Santa's Workshop. With its fascinating tale and impressive technical frolics, THE POLAR EXPRESS is destined to become both a holiday classic and a new turning point in the art of animated cinema.

Superman Returns F/S

For five years, Superman (Brandon Routh) has been away from Earth, coaxed into space by a belief that Krypton may still exist. Finding nothing, he comes back to a changed world--not only has terrorism become rampant, but Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) has married, started a family, and won the Pulitzer for her piece "Why the World Doesn?Tt Need Superman." After a stop in Smallville to see his adopted mother (Eva Marie Saint), Superman is back in Metropolis, and Clark Kent has his old job back at the Daily Planet, with everyone still incredibly oblivious to his alter ego. But where there?Ts Superman, there's Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey), and he is likely to be planning something dastardly--in this case, using a piece of pilfered kryptonite to grow an entirely new continent that he will control.

Bryan Singer (X-MEN 1 and 2), armed with a script by Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty, approaches the red cape with reverence for the lore of the character, and respect for Richard Donner?Ts SUPERMAN (1980) and Richard Lester?Ts 1980 sequel, films that ushered in the era of the modern superhero film. Singer?Ts SUPERMAN is filled with melancholy, and not so subtly suggests the notion of Superman as a Christ figure, sacrificing himself to save mankind. But there are still laughs, mostly courtesy of Spacey (clearly having a blast) and Parker Posey as his moll, Kitty Kowalski, as well as plenty of gasp-inducing set pieces, including a spectacular and terrifying almost-plane crash and a sinking boat. While modern visual effects have allowed Superman to go to entirely new realms, Singer keeps them from becoming the film?Ts raison d'Atre, thus keeping the Man of Steel?Ts gigantic heart intact--heavy though it may be.

In The Mix (F/S)

R&B star Usher makes an assured screen debut in this mix of mob movie and romantic comedy. Chazz Palminenteri co-stars as the friendly don who recruits family friend Darrell (Usher) to play bodyguard for his daughter, Dolly (Emmanuelle Chiriqi). She and Darrell have been friends since they were kids, but the seven years since they last saw each other have changed things. She's grown into a headstrong young law student with a yen for yoga and a smug yuppie boyfriend (Geoff Stults); he's grown into an ultra-smooth chick magnet with dreams of starting his own record company. They're destined for each other, but there's not only the racial issue in their way--someone's trying to take over the family business via treachery and bullets, and Darrell's right in the thick of things. When the interracial romance isn't heating up the screen, there's plenty of raucous comedy supplied by Anthony Fazio as Dolly's pseudo-gangsta younger brother, Kevin Hart as Darrell's loudmouthed co-DJ, and a bulldog with an unfortunate digestion problem. Director Ron Underwood takes his time going around the more edgy turns in the script, giving the actors room to stretch out and get comfortable in their characters and surroundings, and helping the film transcend its more formulaic elements (it's an obvious nod to the 1992 Whitney Houston/Kevin Costner chestnut, THE BODYGUARD). Best of all, Usher proves his game extends to the big screen, where he displays plenty of debonair warmth and easygoing charm.

Death and the Compass (1996)

Alex Cox (REPO MAN) directed this stylized adaptation of Jorge Luis Borges labyrinthine detective story about a totalitarian city of the future plagued by a rash of bizarre crimes. Peter Boyle stars as Lonnrot, a decidedly even headed detective prone to philosophizing and Christopher Eccleston is his nemesis, Red Scarlach, whom Lonnrot believes could be behind these ritualistic crimes. Set in a surreal landscape that provokes Lonnrot's philosophical musings and leads him through mystical cabals and conspiracies within conspiracies, DEATH AND THE COMPASS is a remarkable adaptation of Borges' story, and a fascinating, often exhilarating film.

Liu, (Xia Yu) the young photographer at Master Ren's (Liu Peiqi) well-respected photo shop, is fascinated with new technology. When an Englishman, Raymond Wallace, (Jared Harris) opens "Shadow Magic," a small, dusty theatre touting a new technology of "pictures that move," Liu is incredibly curious. After beholding the ethereal images in rapt amazement, the spellbound photographer begs Wallace for a job. The two men join forces, pledging to earn fortunes to impress Wallace's drifting wife, and Liu's beloved Ling (Xing Yufei), the pretty, aloof daughter of Lord Tan. Liu's double life soon leads to conflict, however, when his father, Ren, and Lord Tan view the "Western gimmick" as a threat to old, Eastern tradition. However, Sobel has problems of his own. He's suffering from a severe identity crisis after the death of his father, and Vitti's presence in his suburban New Jersey home has the psychiatrist acting crazy too. The Little Shop of Horrors/ Ghost on the Loose

King of the B's, director Roger Corman shot this crazy beat-era classic in a mere two days, but it packs plenty of inspired lunacy and clever bits in its 70-minute running time. Jonathan Haze stars as clumsy assistant florist Seymour, who saves his job in Mr. Mushnik's skid-row flower shop when he brings in a unique man-eating plant. The problem is, it's a very hungry plant; every night it opens its huge jaws and demands to be fed, forcing poor Seymour to take to the street in search of victims, lest he disappoint his boss and his adoring girlfriend, Audrey (Jackie Joseph). From a zingy script by Charles Griffith, this hilarious black comedy overflows with great ideas and characters: Corman regular Dick Miller plays a hipster who eats flowers, and a very young Jack Nicholson takes a memorable turn as a masochistic dental patient. DRAGNET-style detective Joe Fink (Wally Campo) narrates as he slowly begins to track the killer down. This oft-revived favorite still generates plenty of laughs and chills, deserving of repeat viewings. A musical version debuted off-Broadway in 1982 and led to a film starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin. The Bowery Boys (the East Side Kids) end up in comedic horror when they try to renovate a crumbling house for Glimpy's newlywed sister and her husband. When the arrive at the address, they mistakenly start to work on the house next door--which is rumored to be haunted! Instead of ghosts, however, the Boys find a group of Nazi spies, led by Bela Lugosi.

The Creature from the Haunted Sea

A mobster hits on a plan while smuggling a deposed general and a fortune in gold out of Cuba on his yacht: He and his crew will scare the general and kill his guards by faking the attacks of a sea monster and thus keep the gold for themselves. Unfortunately, a sea monster actually is attacking them, leading to all sorts of complications. Eventually the yacht sinks, and the survivors find love on a tropical island--and death when they dive to recover the sunken loot. Roger Corman shot this fun quickie in Puerto Rico, where he also filmed THE LAST WOMAN ON EARTH with the same cast, which is deadpan perfect: Paul Carbone is the mobster, Renzo, "the most trustworthy man ever to be deported from Sicily." Future CHINATOWN-scribe Robert Towne (billed as Edward Wain) plays Agent XK150. Betsy Jones-Moreland is Renzo's leggy pistol-packing moll; she also sings the haunting theme song. Beach Dickerson plays one of Renzo?Ts happy thugs, as well as the monster. The script by Charles Griffith taps the same vein of innovative wit that made his LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS and BUCKET OF BLOOD such satisfying cult hits.

House on Haunted Hill

Vincent Price has one of his juiciest roles in this haunted-house thriller as millionaire playboy Frederick Loren, who invites five guests out to a genuine haunted house, offering them each $10,000 if they spend the night. Elisha Cook Jr. plays one of the guests, a nervous alcoholic who has been in this house before and witnessed some terrible things. Mr. Loren's beautiful but treacherous wife (Carol Ohmart) is also present--and might be out to kill Frederick during the course of the evening; then again, he might be out to kill her. Severed heads, a skeleton, an acid vat, ghostly screams, and a noose that creeps around on its own and strangles unsuspecting victims are just some of the treats in a film that has been spooking delighted audiences on late-night TV for decades. Producer-director William Castle (THE TINGLER) claimed this was filmed in a process called Emergo, which meant that at a key moment a glow-in-the-dark skeleton on a wire was rigged to sail over the audience's heads. The skeleton is long since gone, but the goofy thrills remain in this classic tale, from a script by Robb White.

En route, sad sack Manny is startled when he encounters another woolly mammoth, Ellie (Queen Latifah). As happy as Manny is to see another one of his kind, there?Ts a problem: Ellie is convinced that she?Ts a possum like her hyperactive brothers, Crash (Seann William Scott) and Eddie (Josh Peck). And to make matters worse, the melting of the ice has released some ferocious sea creatures that had literally been frozen in time. Will Ellie finally realize that she?Ts a gigantic woolly mammoth and not a pint-sized possum? Is it really the end of the world? Can Manny and the rest of the animals in the valley survive the impending flood? And will Manny be able to leave the past behind now that he knows he?Ts not alone? Casanova (2005)

CASANOVA is loosely based on the memoirs of the writer, adventurer, and infamous lover Giacomo Casanova--themselves notably unreliable--and fortunately has no pretensions to historical realism. Instead, it's a witty, lighthearted romantic comedy, which uses its 18th century setting and renowned hero as a jumping-off point for sexy banter and ruminations on love, lust, and freedom. Directed with visual flair and wit by Lasse Hallstr?sAA?sAAm--a master of classy period pieces like CHOCOLAT and CIDER HOUSE RULES--the movie was filmed on location in Venice, and the stunningly gorgeous scenery is almost a character in its own right. Heath Ledger, believable and engaging here in a role that couldn't be more different from his powerhouse performance in BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, turns on all of his considerable charms here. Abandoned by his mother as a child, Casanova has grown into a lascivious yet oddly innocent young man, who pursues pleasure wholeheartedly and mistakes lust for love. His biggest concern is eluding Italy's puritanical Inquisitors, until he meets Francesca Bruni (Sienna Miller), a beauty who publishes clever pamphlets on women's rights under a pen name. In the time-honored tradition, Casanova is instantly smitten with the one woman in Venice who doesn't want anything to do with him.

The plot provides few surprises, but that is beside the point; the pleasures of CASANOVA are in its warm freewheeling tone, its sumptuous visuals, and the cheerful exuberance of its actors. In addition to Ledger's winning star turn, Lena Olin is her usual mesmerizing self as Francesca's scheming mother, and the reliably excellent Oliver Platt (as Francesca's overmatched fianc?sAAAAc) and Jeremy Irons (as the frustrated head Inquisitor) both deliver deft comic performances.

Julius Caesar/The Apocalypse/Paul The Apostle

The story is filled with epic drama, telling the familiar tale of a leader fueled by power, who was loved and loathed in equal measures, and who ultimately fell at the hands of his greatest ally, Brutus. This faithful rendition of the tale is action-packed, and draws on all the experience of the cast and crew to portray some heady, historical times in ancient Rome. Screen legend Richard Harris stars as the apostle John, living his last years as a captive of the Roman Emperor. As the last living witness to Jesus Christ's inner circle, he is trying to spread the Lord's message to all who will listen. A young Christian woman named Irene gains access to John in prison, and receives his written records, which go on to form the Book of Revelations. Originally known as Paul of Tarsus, Paul tortured and persecuted Christians until he experienced a vision of Jesus that forever changed his life. After converting to Christianity, Paul suffered persecution and imprisonment, but never stopped trying to spread the teachings of Christ. Notably, this program was shot on location in the Moroccan desert.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

Sacha Baron Cohen brings his Borat character to the big screen with this feature length adaptation of his American exploits. Fans of DA ALI G SHOW will already be familiar with the devilishly simple Borat formula, in which the heavily mustachioed TV host from Kazakhstan dupes a number of unwitting citizens into revealing their deepest prejudices, and this movie takes that premise, stirs in a little narrative structure, and serves a side-splitting 84-minute mirth-fest. The action begins with Borat traveling to America alongside his producer Azamat Bagatov (Ken Davitian). After a hotel room viewing of BAYWATCH Borat decides he must travel to California to woo Pamela Anderson, so he and the long-suffering Azamat take a cross-country road trip in an ice cream van, encountering some funny, disturbing, and deeply strange individuals along the way.

SEINFELD producer Larry Charles lends his directing talents to BORAT, and he gets the balance between the loosely threaded plot and Borat?Ts encounters with real Americans exactly right. At times the movie threatens to topple over into glorious anarchy, with each situation escalating to ridiculous (and ridiculously funny) extremes, but Charles knows exactly when to put the brakes on and progress to Borat?Ts next encounter--although the police are called at the tail-end of one memorable sequence. Keen-eyed viewers will notice some repetition from the TV show, with Borat once again going to a rodeo and again taking etiquette lessons, but it?Ts almost as if Cohen treats each of these set-pieces as a comedic "bit" he is working on, gradually adding further delirium every time he goes back for another shot. Sometimes it?Ts difficult to tell who, if any, of BORAT?Ts participants are actors, but it matters little when the material is this gut-wrenchingly funny, and it?Ts testament to Cohen?Ts talents that he?Ts managed to take a marginal supporting character from his TV show and turned him into a genuine cultural phenomenon.

You, Me and Dupree W/S

Carl Peterson (Matt Dillon) and Randy Dupree (Owen Wilson) have been friends forever. But everything changes when Carl marries Molly Thompson (Kate Hudson) and best man Dupree becomes the third wheel. Free-spirited Dupree?Ts antics suddenly seem juvenile and Carl has to decide where his loyalty lies--with his new wife or his best friend. Still, when Carl discovers that Dupree is down on his luck--he?Ts lost his job, his company car, and his apartment--he invites his best buddy to move in until he?Ts back on his feet. Unfortunately, Dupree isn?Tt exactly Molly's idea of the perfect houseguest. This perpetual bachelor is really an overgrown kid who moves in with a giant moosehead, likes to sleep in the buff, has some unpleasant hygiene issues, and treats life like one big party. Despite Dupree?Ts inability to grow up, he has a good heart: he?Ts just trying to find his niche and enjoy every day along the way. To make matters worse for Molly, Carl has become a cranky workaholic since his boss, Molly?Ts father (Michael Douglas), promoted him. Disheartened by her new husband?Ts late hours, Molly begins to spend more time with Dupree and to see his softer side--something that even Carl has never been aware of. Carl, meanwhile, begins to resent his lackadaisical friend and to question his motives. Ultimately, it?Ts up to Dupree to get Carl and Molly back on track. Wilson gives Dupree a puppy-dog quality that makes him immensely likable, even when he?Ts screwing up. Dillon is surprisingly funny as the straight man in the duo, trying to balance his old life with his new responsibilities. Supporting actor Seth Rogen is a hoot as Carl and Dupree?Ts friend, Neil, who desperately wants to be his own man but is completely under his wife?Ts thumb.

Kids in America

Booker High has fallen under the draconian leadership of Principal Weller (Julie Bowen), who is systemically revoking the rights of the school?Ts students in her effort to become School Superintendent. Fortunately, English teacher Mr. Drucker (Malik Yoba), a former documentary filmmaker specializing in social issues, is encouraging a small group of students to "change da world." Most inspired by Drucker is Holden Donovan (Gregory Smith of TV?Ts EVERWOOD), who uses a talent show as a platform to lambaste Weller's suppression of free speech. His stunt gets him expelled, but he isn?Tt deterred from haunting the school--with some help from a similarly determined group of free thinkers--and seeing that Weller never makes it to the school board.

Taking the average teen film template and twisting it into something smarter, Josh Stolberg?Ts funny, goodhearted KIDS IN AMERICA provides the requisite amount of sex jokes, but makes a clear case for freedom of expression and tolerance. Unabashedly critical of the Bush administration, it also sees Weller cite the Patriot Act as a defense for ignoring students' rights and expelling two gay students for kissing. Including several visual homages to classic teen films, and using interviews with real kids who upheld free speech in their schools to replace the usual closing-credits bloopers, KIDS IN AMERICA challenges the ordinary.

Report From the Aleutians

A profile of life for the soldiers assigned to the Aleutians Islands in the North Pacific, the most remote outpost of World War II. John Huston directed and narrated most of this documentary from the island of Adak for six months with his camera crew. Adak was a bomber base for raids against Kiska Island, of the Japanese. Huston and his crew came very close to getting killed during one of those raids while shooting a crucial and very real bombing scene. He captured the value of the troops back at the base during the destitution of this horrible war. The sacrifice, the bloodshed, the commitment, the strength, and the intensity these brave men gave up for their country is all well documented and portrayed in REPORT FROM THE ALEUTIANS. Rocky Balboa

ROCKY BALBOA, the sixth installment of the long-running film franchise, should amount to nothing more than a lame punch line to a TONIGHT SHOW monologue joke. However, just as his longtime corner man Paulie describes the Italian Stallion himself, this movie is all heart. Thirty years after Sylvester Stallone first introduced the underdog backroom brawler from Philadelphia in the Oscar-winning ROCKY, Rocky Balboa returns for one last dance. Speculation as to whether Balboa, in his prime, would have been able to defeat lackluster champ Mason "The Line" Dixon spurs Dixon?Ts management to set up an exhibition fight between the two. That Balboa is in his 50s in the film and wouldn?Tt be sanctioned to fight anyone, let alone a man 30 years his junior and in the prime of life, must be left up to the viewer?Ts ability to suspend disbelief. To its credit, however, the movie addresses at every turn the insanity of a man approaching 60 getting back into a boxing ring, and Balboa?Ts impassioned explanation of his motivations is just believable enough to give all other improbabilities a free pass.

Though it may sound like faint praise, this is the best ROCKY movie since the original. It's very much a love letter to Philadelphia, and Stallone, who wrote and directed the movie, shoots everything with an unflinching eye that humanizes the mean streets of the City of Brotherly Love and evokes the gritty dignity of the original film. And while Burt Young?Ts cantankerous Paulie and Tony Burton?Ts Duke both return, Talia Shire, sadly, does not reprise her role as the beloved Adrian. It?Ts revealed early in the film that Adrian has died of cancer, and it?Ts the pain of that tragedy that ultimately fuels Rocky. Boxing as a metaphor for life is certainly nothing new, but Stallone makes a legitimate contribution to the tradition with ROCKY BALBOA. Life hits harder than any man can, and one?Ts ability to keep getting up until the final bell rings is the true measure of self. Corny? Perhaps. But when Bill Conti?Ts legendary score kicks in and Rocky starts pounding the heavy bag, the metaphor feels truly profound.

A Good Year F/S

Ridley Scott (BLADE RUNNER, GLADIATOR) directs this romantic comedy based on the book of the same name by Peter Mayle. London banker Max Skinner (Russell Crowe) is a cutthroat workaholic who cares only about winning and making money. During his rise to the top, Max has forgotten the important life lessons that his favorite uncle, Henry (Albert Finney), taught him during summers at his vineyard in Provence. Estranged from Henry for years, Max is surprised to learn that his uncle has passed away and as his closest living relative, he is set to inherit the estate, La Siroque. True to form, Max tools down to Provence for a quick visit in order to assess the value of the property with dollar signs in his eyes.

Once immersed in Henry?Ts world and the charm of La Siroque, Max begins to remember his visits and how much Henry and those summers meant to him. Other surprises--including a budding romance with fetching local cafAc owner Fanny Chenal (Marion Cotillard) and a visit from a young American claiming to be Henry?Ts illegitimate daughter (Abbie Cornish)--prolong Max?Ts visit, making Provence more and more difficult to resist. Can Max be content leaving his fast-paced life in London for lazy days in a French vineyard? Or will he sell his estate to the highest bidder, memories and all, and return to his hectic lifestyle? Crowe shows his softer-side--and even throws in some physical comedy--as a man revisiting his past and considering his future. Finney is a charmer as Henry in flashback scenes (where Freddie Highmore plays a young Max) that establish his character?Ts joie de vivre and the tender relationship shared between uncle and nephew. Didier Bourdon is Francis Duflot, the tender of the vineyard, and Tom Hollander plays Charlie, Max?Ts best friend.

Frantic

Description: Roman PolanskiA,?Ts FRANTIC is an engaging thriller in the tradition of Alfred Hitchcock. Harrison Ford plays Richard Walker, an American heart surgeon vacationing with his wife, Sondra (Betty Buckley), in Paris, where he is to attend a medical convention. Sondra suddenly and unexpectedly disappears from the coupleA,?Ts hotel room while Richard is taking a shower, and when she doesnA,?Tt return after several hours, he decides to report the incident. But neither the French police nor the U.S. embassy offers much help or even appears particularly interested in his dilemma. On the brink of despair, Walker decides to embark on an investigation himself, aided by Michelle (Emmanuelle Seigner), a carefree, seductive gamine who is also mixed up in the case, as he discovers after tracing back to her a mysterious piece of switched luggage that he suspects his wifeA,?Ts kidnappers are after. When the mismatched duo finally succeed in tracking down the perpetrators, it becomes apparent that the stakes in this extortion scheme are far higher than they imagined. Ford, cast somewhat against type, gives a credible, low-key performance as the anxious Walker. Polanski also cowrote this suspenseful film, assigning the female lead to his young wife (Seigner). Reviews Los Angeles Times 02/26/1988 "...An elegant, icy thriller....[The film] shows us a brilliant filmmaker using some of the best tricks in his deadly arsenal..."New York Times 02/26/1988 "...Urgency and personality. [Polanski] has succeeded in picking up the clever, unnerving thread of his earlier career..." Synopsis An American heart surgeon is confronted with a heartbreaking mystery when he arrives in Paris for a convention and his wife inexplicably vanishes. His search for her leads him into an urban underworld where he forges an alliance with a beautiful young woman who holds the only clue to his wife's whereabouts.

The Illusionist F/S

In 1900 Vienna, a magician named Eisenheim the Illusionist is mystifying audiences with a remarkable magic act that is seemingly too good to believe. Chief Inspector Uhl, who is in the pocket of Crown Prince Leopold--and considers himself somewhat of an amateur conjurer--becomes obsessed with Eisenheim; Uhl is not only desperate to find out the secrets behind Eisenheim's tricks but also worried that the master magician might pose a threat to the crown prince's nefarious plans. In addition, Eisenheim is quickly growing close to Duchess Sophie von Teschen, his childhood love, who is engaged to Leopold. As Eisenheim's act becomes even more amazing--including apparently raising the spirits of the dead--he enrages the crown prince even further, leading to deception and murder. Edward Norton (FIGHT CLUB), who studied magic with Ricky Jay (THE SPANISH PRISONER) in preparing for the role, is terrific as Eisenheim, an enigmatic showman hiding a dark side. The excellent supporting cast features fine performances by Rufus Sewell (A KNIGHT'S TALE) as the evil, conniving Leopold; Jessica Biel (7TH HEAVEN) as the beautiful Sophie; and Paul Giamatti (SIDEWAYS) as the perceptive but bumbling Uhl. Written and directed by Neil Burger (INTERVIEW WITH THE ASSASSIN), THE ILLUSIONIST, which is based on a short story by Pulitzer Prizewinner Steven Millhauser, is a complex tale filled with mystery and awe. The compelling score was composed by minimalist musician Philip Glass and conducted by Michael Reisman.

When Cory is murdered gangland style, Hallenbeck teams up with the former football hero to find the killers. Their search leads them deep into the world of professional football, politics, legalized gambling and sadistic hitmen. LETHAL WEAPON screenwriter Shane Black wrote the script for this violent, action-packed thriller directed by Tony Scott (TOP GUN, TRUE ROMANCE). Willis plays Hallenbeck with a sadistic glint in his eye and a deathwish.

Eragon F/S

Based on the first novel in Christopher Paolini?Ts popular INHERITANCE trilogy, ERAGON is a fantastical adventure in a vein similar to that of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA. A classic story of a quest driven by destiny and set in a land where elves, magicians, and humans live side by side, the battle between good and evil, innocence and cynicism, is taken up once again. John Malkovitch camps it up as the evil King Galbatorix, a former guardian of peace who long ago went over to the dark side. He now rules over a land from which dragons have all but disappeared, until humble farm boy Eragon (newcomer Edward Speelers) happens upon a mysterious blue object that turns out to be a dragon egg. Eragon befriends the charming dragon cub, Saphira (voiced with aplomb by Rachel Weisz), and becomes her rider, designating him as the principal warrior in the fight against evil. Jeremy Irons steals the show as the wise and mysterious old man who becomes Eragon?Ts mentor, guiding him through the tasks of saving a princess (Sienna Guillory) battling an evil sorcerer (Robert Carlyle, TRAINSPOTTING), and fending off hordes of the hideous Urgals. All of this will strike the seasoned fantasy viewer as familiar territory, but the formula is given life by veterans Malkovitch and Irons, as well as the young Speelers. The film was shot mostly in Hungary, whose breathtaking landscape combines to great effect with excellent cinematography. The special effects, created by LORD OF THE RINGS?T Digital Magic and STAR WARS?T Industrial Light and Magic, more than live up to the precedent set by those films, while the dragon is film?Ts true star.

Showtime

SHOWTIME deftly combines clever satire and explosive action, taking the buddy cop movie in a new direction. Robert De Niro stars as Mitch Preston, a no-nonsense detective who makes headlines when he shoots the television camera right out of the hands of a meddlesome photographer during a bust. The department is sued for millions, but a slick producer (Rene Russo) drops the suit to force Mitch to star on the network?Ts new reality series. Trey Sellars (Eddie Murphy), a struggling actor and incompetent patrolman, bamboozles his way into a plum role as Mitch?Ts partner. Mitch is a better cop, but Trey knows a lot more about how to be a TV star. He even comes up with the show?Ts catchphrase: "It?Ts SHOWTIME!" In the film?Ts funniest setpiece, William Shatner is brought in to teach Mitch and Trey how to master important TV cop procedures, like jumping on the hood of a car. Things get more serious as the celebrity cops track down a crazed criminal armed with a powerful new weapon. Director Tom Dey (SHANGHAI NOON) keeps things moving, and laces the action with reflexive humor. Murphy is in fine comic form, and has terrific chemistry with De Niro.

The In-Laws

In 1979, Alan Arkin and Peter Falk starred in the classic comedy THE IN-LAWS, in which Arkin played a timid dentist who gets involved in dangerous government intrigue--or with the ravings of a lunatic--when he meets Vincent Ricardo (Falk), the father of the man Arkin's daughter is going to marry. That hysterical situation is back with Andrew Fleming's riotous remake, with Albert Brooks as Jerry Peyser, a podiatrist who gets more than he ever could have bargained for when his daughter, Melissa (Lindsay Sloane), gets engaged to Mark (Ryan Reynolds), whose father, Steve Tobias (Michael Douglas), claims to be a spy and involves Jerry in some very questionable--and very funny--situations. Douglas and Brooks make a great comedic duo. The outstanding cast in this wild romp also includes Candice Bergen as Judy, the mother of the groom; Maria Nicossa as Katherine, the mother of the bride; and David Suchet as Jean-Pierre Thibodoux, a villain who believes Jerry to be criminal mastermind Fat Cobra. The soundtrack includes well-known 1970s pop songs as well as new music from Paul McCartney.

Carrie

Description: Brian De Palma's commercial breakout, based on a novel by Stephen King, helped launch a whole slew of teen-based horror films, and Carrie the blood-spattered prom queen has taken her throne in the pantheon of modern American myth. High school girls played by Amy Irving (in her film debut), P.J. Soles, and Nancy Allen plot to avenge themselves on ostracized fellow student and budding telekinetic Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) after they get in trouble for pelting her with tampons. When they get popular boy Tommy Ross (William Katz) to be her date for the prom, the stage is set for some heart-rending cruelty and fiery retribution. De Palma expertly uses split screens, slow motion, color filters, and tracking shots to imbue the proceedings with a haunting, allegorical elegance. Piper Laurie plays CarrieA,?Ts mentally ill, devoutly Christian mom; sheA,?Ts brilliant, as is Spacek. John Travolta has a memorable pre-SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER role as one of the girls' beer-guzzling boyfriends. There was finally a sequel in 1999, as well as a short-lived Broadway musical. Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera F/S

Those who thought that smoke machines and cobwebbed candelabras were the stuff of Halloween parties and dance clubs need to think again. In Joel Schumacher's film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Broadway musical THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, these moody set devices--and countless others--make every scene an atmospheric vision of souped-up 19th-century Gothic bliss. Christine Daee (a luminescent Emmy Rossum) is a tortured young star who is haunted by the voice of the phantom (Gerard Butler--who also played the lead in DRACULA 2000), a musician who hides in the shadows to hide a facial disfigurement, yet sings to her obsessively. Dwelling in the dark, damp chambers beneath the Paris opera house, the phantom lords over the cast and management with artistic autocracy--he writes the shows, casts them, and threatens all who disobey his plans with dramatically violent outbursts. But when his young student Christine falls for the rich and dapper Raoul (Patrick Wilson), the phantom descends into madness. Webber's memorable songs are performed with aplomb by Rossum, whose background includes singing with the Metropolitan Opera, and Wilson and Butler provide ample accompaniment. One of the treats of the proceedings is Minnie Driver's deeply exaggerated portrayal of the jealous diva, giving this PHANTOM a very appropriate dose of comic relief.

The Pursuit of Happyness W/S

Will Smith is a father struggling to take care of his young son in this touching tale based on a true story. In San Francisco circa 1981, Chris Gardner?Ts (Smith) luck has run out. A bad business investment, a bevy of parking tickets, and back taxes in addition to rent, childcare, and groceries keep him constantly scrambling for cash. Chris thinks his luck is changing when he is accepted into a highly competitive internship program at a brokerage firm. But the internship is unpaid and soon, despite his best efforts, Chris and his five-year old son, Christopher (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith--Will Smith?Ts real life son), find themselves homeless. Chris might spend his days training to invest and make millions, but he and Christopher spend their nights in shelters and public transportation stations.

Gardner?Ts story is a testament not only to the love between a father and son, but also to the strength of the human spirit. Will Smith turns in a fine, nuanced performance as a man determined to protect his son and make a life for himself and his family. Jaden Smith is an adorable scene-stealer as young Christopher. The real-life father and son pairing translates well onto the big screen; the two have terrific natural chemistry. Their affection for each other is apparent, even as they weather the tough times. This is Italian director Gabriele Muccino?Ts (THE LAST KISS, REMEMBER ME MY LOVE) first film in the English language. Thandie Newton also stars as Christopher?Ts overworked and defeated mother in this tearjerker which was inspired by a segment on the television news program 20/20. Gardner also wrote a book of the same name that was released in 2006.

The Last Kiss F/S

Based on the Italian film L?TULTIMO BACIO and directed by Tony Goldwyn (A WALK ON THE MOON), THE LAST KISS is a film about growing pains and choices. Nearing his 30th birthday, marriage-phobic Michael (Zach Braff) loves his live-in girlfriend Jenna (Jacinda Barrett), but worries that there are no surprises left in his life. Enter Kim (Rachel Bilson), a vibrant college student who Michael meets at a wedding. Soon, he finds himself treading in dangerous territory; he loves Jenna, but is intrigued by Kim and attracted to both her and to the possibilities that a new relationship offers. With Kim, Michael not only feels 10 years younger, but also as if anything is possible. Now, he has to decide if pursuing Kim is worth the risk of losing Jenna, and if the life he has planned with Jenna is in fact the life he really wants.

Michael, meanwhile, is not the only one experiencing growing pains; his friends have their own relationship issues. Izzy (Michael Weston) is battling heartbreak after being dumped by his longtime girlfriend. Chris (Casey Affleck) and his wife already have a rocky relationship, and are feeling the stress of having their first baby. Kenny (Eric Christian Olsen) is the only one without relationship issues--but that?Ts only because he is determined to remain a single ladies man. Then there are Jenna?Ts parents, Anna (Blythe Danner) and Stephen (Tom Wilkinson), who are facing their own issues after 30 years of marriage. THE LAST KISS looks at relationships from all angles, and shies away from finger pointing and laying blame. Instead, it acknowledges that the world is full of temptation, and that growing up is serious business. Braff does a nice job of conveying Michael?Ts confusion without asking for sympathy.

Casino Royale

After a great deal of discussion--on the part of fans and producers alike--over Daniel Craig?Ts (THE MOTHER, MUNICH) suitability for the role of James Bond, he more than proves himself in this explosive revamping of the franchise. Under the direction of Martin Campbell (THE MASK OF ZORRO) and with Paul Haggis (CRASH) helping with the re-writes, this addition to the Bond canon manages to hold true to the essence of the stories--the villainous villains, the fabulous sets, the beautiful women, the fast-paced action--while updating the formula with subtlety and humanity.

Trading in the Cold War era for a new, post-9-11 landscape, the tale unfolds in locations that span the globe, including the Bahamas, Venice, and the Czech Republic. It opens in Madagascar, where Bond pursues a guerilla bomb-maker in one of the most breathtaking chase scenes ever--and it all takes place on foot. Botching that assignment, Bond goes to Montenegro to square off against terrorist baddie Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelson), an international loan shark who gambles with the money of his equally dangerous clients. Beautiful British Treasury representative Vesper Lynd (Eva Green, THE DREAMERS) supplies Bond?Ts own funds, appearing on his arm in Montenegro, while M (Dame Judi Dench, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE) keeps a close watch on the action from headquarters. The extravagant poker game forms the center of the action, with Jeffrey Wright (SYRIANA, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE) putting in an intense appearance at the table; interrupting the game are assassination attempts, poisoning, and other dramatic events that keep the adrenaline pumping. The flirtation that unfolds between Bond and Vesper Lynd is only in keeping with the spy?Ts M.O. as a ladies?T man. What differs here, however, is what sets this Bond apart from the rest: the romance is taken seriously, and it exposes a vulnerability in Bond that he?Ts never shown before. This, however, only makes him the tougher, as Craig's Bond is darker, less campy, more brooding and mysterious, than his past incarnations ever were.

Stranger Than Fiction

Known to most audiences for his hilarious characters, funnyman Will Ferrell continues to try his hand at more serious material with STRANGER THAN FICTION. The film comes as relatively light fare for director Marc Foster, whose previous works were FINDING NEVERLAND and MONSTER'S BALL. While not exactly a drama, the film shifts between humorous and heavy realms, one of its central questions being: "What makes a comedy or a tragedy?" In WINTER PASSING and MELINDA AND MELINDA, Ferrell awkwardly occupied a strange space that was neither clearly dramatic nor comedic, leaving audiences confused over whether to laugh at the actor or with him. Here, in the role of boring Harold Crick he appears a bit more at ease, as Harold is not expected to be funny--funny things just happen to him. Instead of depending on Ferrell for jokes, the film delivers laughs on its own by exploring what happens when an IRS agent with a dull, solitary life receives unwanted company in the form of an intrusive female voice narrating his every move. As distracting as this is, things become truly worrisome when the narrator (Emma Thompson as an eccentric author) informs Harold of his looming death.

How Harold?Ts life changes as a result of this terrifying knowledge depends largely on wacky Professor Jules Hilbert (Dustin Hoffman) and on tax-evading baker/love interest Ana Pascal (Maggie Gyllenhaal). While Queen Latifah?Ts role as an author?Ts assistant is underdeveloped, Tony Hale brings an innocent charm as Harold?Ts coworker and only friend. At times, the film?Ts take on existentialist themes feels strikingly familiar, and is clearly influenced by features like ADAPTATION and I HEART HUCKABEES. Among its strengths, the film features interesting sets seemingly influenced by the 1950s version of the future, and functions as a small step forward for Ferrell.

Richard Gere plays Sullivan "Sully" Travis (better known as Dr. T), a man whose good looks and overflowing charm have made him the most popular gynecologist in all of Texas. Things begin to go wrong for Dr. T when his beautiful wife, Kate (Farrah Fawcett), begins to lose her sanity. He sends her to a mental hospital with the hopes of a full recovery, but her regression into childhood seems to be permanent. Adding to the mass confusion is an unexpected visit from his alcoholic sister-in-law, Peggy (Laura Dern), who brings along her three children, as well as the constant battles between Dr. T's two daughters: the soon-to-be-married Dee Dee (Kate Hudson) and the jealous Connie (Tara Reid). Upon meeting his country club's new assistant golf pro, Bree (Helen Hunt), Dr. T finally feels like he's met his match--a beautiful, independent woman who has no desire to be swept off her feet. Trying to juggle the pressures of his personal and professional life, Dr. T's recent problems culminate on Dee Dee's rain-soaked wedding day. Bowling for Columbine

Filmmaker and leftist activist Michael Moore asks some serious questions as he probes the depths of America's trigger-happy gun culture in the insightful and amusing documentary, BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE. Guns in America are used to kill an average of more than 11,000 people per year. This death toll is obscenely out of balance with other first world countries, which generally average a total in double digits. Experts and analysts have pointed to America's bloody history as a reason, but how does that explain the lower murder rate in Germany? Violent entertainment has also been fingered, but how does this account for staggeringly low numbers in Japan, home of the most violent entertainment video games on the market.

Moore's trademark comedic tone is razor-sharp as his quest leads him everywhere from Littleton Colorado's Columbine High School to the home of NRA President Charlton Heston. Moore, oddly enough a lifetime NRA member, makes his main target the news media, but also fires away at inefficient welfare programs, Dick Clark, and Kmart. The latter is even compelled to make a major policy change in their stores due to one of Moore's confrontational stunts. This exploration into America's obsession with guns is disarmingly humorous, but Moore also asks challenging questions and fearlessly seeks responsible parties, making the film an effective call for more social awareness as well.

Interspersed with popular music and live action footage of Cosby himself, FAT ALBERT describes social issues, personal problems, and the nonsensical antics of Rudy, Mushmouth, Donald, Bill, Weird Harold, and Russell. The series, which ran from 1972 to 1984, was a regular for Saturday morning couch potatoes who loved how Fat Albert's gang turned a forbidding urban landscape into a playground.

Batman Begins

Notes Full Frame Genius of mystery and intrigue Christopher Nolan (MEMENTO, FOLLOWING, INSOMNIA) helms this prequel to the Batman films based on the DC Comics series, explaining how Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale)--the billionaire prince of Gotham whose parents were killed in an alleyway mugging--transformed into the crime-fighting superhero. With flashbacks to his privileged childhood, young Master Wayne, as he is called by the butler Alfred (Michael Caine), develops a terrible fear of bats when he falls through the backyard garden into a hidden cave. As a young adult, Wayne lives among the League of Shadows, a martial arts group in the mountains of Asia. His leaders Ra's al Ghul (Ken Watanabe) and Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson) teach him strength, endurance, and--unfortunately--evil, against which he naturally rebels. Returning to Gotham and reinstating himself as a dapper socialite and the rightful heir to his parents' enterprise, Wayne quickly devises his secret identity, commanding help from the gadgetry expert Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman). With one eye on his childhood playmate Rachel (Katie Holmes)--now a beautiful woman and dedicated lawyer--and the other on his mission to save Gotham from criminal corruption, Batman makes his fledgling debut. But when the blue-blooded mastermind Dr. Crane (Cillian Murphy)--who steals every scene with chilling menace--taints the water system with a hallucinatory substance, Batman realizes he has met his first true opponent. An attitude of grave seriousness elevates BATMAN BEGINS above more cartoony Batman movies, as Nolan crafts a dark drama that thrives on sci-fi intrigue. Bale strides into the role with grace, adding refinement that is seldom seen in action-oriented films. And while the action scenes explode with high-tech glitz and fast-moving thrills, they are evenly placed among sequences of plot and character development, making for a complex and satisfying viewing experience. Reviews Film Comment 11/01/2005 "[B]rooding, carefully crafted, and comparatively low-tech....Mr. Bale brings true gravity and pathos to the task at hand."Rolling Stone 11/03/2005 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Lined with wry humor, the film addresses questions of corporate greed..."Uncut 08/01/2005 "This intimate, brooding resurrection brings the Caped Crusader back to life by sending him back to his roots."Sight and Sound 08/01/2005 "[I]t's the flair of the set pieces that really impresses....The film delivers a pleasingly robust sense of spectacle....It is a welcome new beginning."USA Today 06/17/2005 "Christian Bale makes the best Bruce Wayne/Batman since Warner Bros. revived the franchise in 1989."New York Times 06/15/2005 "[T]his tense, effective iteration of Bob Kane's original comic book owes its power and pleasures to a director who takes his material seriously and to a star who shoulders that seriousness with ease."Entertainment Weekly 06/24/2005 "[A] triumph -- a confidently original, engrossing interpretation, with a seriously thought-through aesthetic point of view..."

Son of the Mask

Billed as the sequel to the hit 1994 film THE MASK--which featured an unforgettably cartoonish performance by Jim Carrey--Larry Guterman's SON OF THE MASK is another energetic movie that blends special effects, action, and comedy to create an admirable entry to the genre. This time around, the star of the film is Jamie Kennedy (MALIBU'S MOST WANTED), who plays Tim Avery, a young husband with a fear of fatherhood. Unfortunately, he is about to become just that, alongside his excited wife Tonya (Traylor Howard). What makes an already bad situation worse is Tim's eventual realization that his son was conceived under the powers of the eternal Mask of Loki, which has turned his son into an uncontrollable monster. Then there's the arrival of the actual Loki (Alan Cumming), an evil figure who has come to reclaim his mask and win the approval of his overly critical father, Odin (Bob Hoskins). As Tim battles against Loki and tries to return his son to normalcy, he learns what being a good father is all about. Featuring stellar special effects, standout performances (most notably by Kennedy and Cumming), and lewd gags, SON OF THE MASK is ultimately a celebration of fatherhood--albeit in a very supernatural way.

The Polar Express F/S

Description: Director Robert Zemeckis revolutionized the art of animated film in 1998's WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT by dropping cartoon characters into the same frame with flesh-and-blood actors. Reviews Los Angeles Times 11/10/2004 "[T} here is wonder for us to cherish, courtesy of a spectacular visual sense.... It does nicely with its quieter moments, especially in the emotional scenes that close the story."

Charlotte Gray

CHARLOTTE GRAY is directed by Gillian Armstrong (MRS. SOFFEL, OSCAR AND LUCINDA) with her signature recipe for success: a love story set in beautiful nature played by an all-star cast. Here, Charlotte Gray (Cate Blanchett) is a Scottish woman in mid-WWII, living with an adventuresome pair of young female roommates. While attending a snooty book publishing party, Charlotte escapes from her girlfriends long enough to meet a British pilot, Peter (Rupert Penry-Jones), with whom she falls in love. After a brief but passionate affair, Peter is sent on a mission to Nazi-occupied France where his plane is shot down and he is reported M.I.A. Torn apart by love, Charlotte enlists herself as an underground operative in the resistance and accepts a mission to rural France. Charlotte, now working under the code name Dominique, parachutes out of an airplane, and captures two young Jewish boys in her net. The man who untagles the bunch, Julien (Billy Crudup), becomes her one trusted contact, and arranges a job for her as governess to the two boys, hiding out in the chateau owned by his curmudgeonly father (Michael Gambon). Presenting a beautiful love story complicated by WWII tension, Armstrong creates a photographically impeccable film with a strong orchestral score and a capable, utterly attractive cast. CHARLOTTE GRAY is based on the best-selling novel by Sebastian Faulks.

The Tuxedo

In THE TUXEDO, Jackie Chan stars as Jimmy Tong, a taxi driver who's aggressive behind the wheel, but painfully shy outside of his cab. Jimmy's driving talents garner the attention of a secret organization, and soon he's hired as the chauffeur for the suave, enigmatic agent Clark Devlin (Jason Isaacs). However, when Devlin is severely injured in an assassination attempt, Jimmy must don Devlin's suit--which just happens to be a state-of-the-art, two-billion-dollar weapon loaded with special capabilities and gadgets. Paired up with ambitious but inexperienced agent Del Blaine (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Jimmy must continue Devlin's mission, which involves foiling Dietrich Banning (Ritchie Coster), a power-mad bottled-water mogul. Kevin Donovan's action-packed comedy gives the talented Chan an unusual opportunity to play a character not adept at martial arts. Of course, once he puts on the tuxedo, he's capable of amazing physical feats, but Chan revels in hamming it up as someone who's literally not in control of his actions. Meanwhile, Hewitt provides catty support, and Isaacs (the villain in THE PATRIOT) makes the most of his good-guy role. A goofy Bond-ish romp, THE TUXEDO also features Debi Mazar as a tough secret agent and Peter Stormare as a nerdy mad scientist.

Business is Business

Dutch auteur Paul Verhoeven first major feature, BUSINESS IS BUSINESS, is a casual look into the lurid lives of two Amsterdam prostitutes, Greta and Nell. Greta is the proverbial hooker with a heart of gold, and Nell is her buxom partner, and together the two turn tricks and perform kinky stunts for the kooks who have enough money. However, the two are tiring of their lives, and a chance to begin anew presents itself when Nell finally takes Greta's advice to leave her abusive husband. Soon, both Greta and Nell are dating men who provide a respite from the chaos of their profession. Based on the writings of Albert Mol, Verhoeven's film certainly has no shortage of sex, but its bawdy humor and unexpected warmth are what sets it apart from the director's 1990s output.

Eight Legged Freaks

New Zealand-born Ellory Elkayem's EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS is a ridiculously irreverent romp that pays homage to American b-movies of the 1950s. Set in the nearly bankrupt mining town of Prosperity, Arizona, the film opens with the timely return of Chris McCormack (David Arquette). On the outskirts of town, a spider-loving eccentric discovers that water from a nearby river has a steroid-like effect on his tiny creatures. Unfortunately, that's because it has been contaminated by a toxic substance. It isn't long before the now-monstrous spiders are terrorizing Prosperity's townspeople. Taking refuge in the Prosperity Mall, Chris and his fellow cohorts--the beautiful Sheriff Sam Parker (Kari Wuhrer), her kids Mike (Scott Terra) and Ashley (Scarlett Johansson), Deputy Pete (Rick Overton), and paranoid radio DJ Harlan (Doug E. Doug)--search for a way to destroy the gigantic monsters before they are destroyed. Handpicked by producers Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, writer-director Elkayem rises to the challenge. He successfully retains the lighthearted, low-budget feel of similar-toned 1950s classics (TARANTULA, THEM!) and merges it with a modern, big-budget aesthetic, to create an outrageously fresh contribution to the "mutant bug" genre.

White Oleander

WHITE OLEANDER, the Janet Fitch novel made famous on Oprah's Book Club, is the tale of an intense and toxic mother-daughter relationship, coupled with a look at the fundamentally skewed U.S. foster care system. When the beautiful photographer Ingrid Magnusson (Michelle Pfeiffer) is imprisoned for allegedly murdering a philandering boyfriend, her daughter Astrid (Alison Lohman) does her best to survive a string of foster homes where natural adolescent mistakes turn into land mines. Her first stop is the home of a born-again Christian, Starr (Robin Wright Penn, who is so good in this part she's physically unrecognizable.) Next, she is sent to the home of a clinically depressed actress, Claire Richards (Renee Zellweger, whose natural effervescence is delightfully disturbing here.) Claire uses Astrid to fill the void left by a roaming husband (Noah Wyle). Astrid juggles her list of changing homes with visits to Mommy Dearest in prison, while suffering flashbacks of the alleged murder.

WHITE OLEANDER, the first feature for U.K. television director Peter Kosminsky, is stark and brooding. Its simultaneously awful and lovely tone is reminiscent of AMERICAN BEAUTY or THE ICE STORM.

Britannia Hospital (1982) (Out of Print)

Director Lindsay Anderson and screenwriter David Sherwin continue their story of Mick Travis (Malcolm McDowell), who played the rebellious school boy in the 1969 film IF and the go-getter coffee salesman in the 1973 film O LUCKY MAN! In BRITANNIA HOSPITAL, Mick Travis is now an undercover investigative TV reporter in another allegorical story of the decline of the West. Set in a large, 500-year-old public hospital, BRITANNIA HOSPITAL is a dark, scatter-shot, Swiftian satire of the class conflicts in pre-Thatcher England. The hospital, staffed by megalomaniacal doctors, is in a state of near anarchy as its administration prepares for a visit from The Queen. Striking workers only allow "croakers"--patients near death--into the hospital, the kitchen staff refuses to prepare food until union leaders are bought off with promises of O.B.E.'s, and the head surgeon (Graham Crowden) conducts, with public funds, expensive, deranged experiments, like inventing a modern Dr. Frankenstein, while poor patients are deprived of basic services. On the day of the Royal visit, busloads of protesters arrive, and after a battle with riot police, attempt to prevent the Royal ceremony.

Working in a less apocalyptic and surreal style than the style of O LUCKY MAN!, but still more fantastic than the American comedy THE HOSPITAL, Anderson and Sherwin try to anchor this extremely black comedy to a somewhat realistic setting while still aiming at nothing less than a comic indictment of all the ills of Western culture.

Flushed Away W/S

This computer-animated feature, directed by David Bowers and Sam Fell, explores a whole new world under London. A pet mouse named Roddy St. James (voiced by Hugh Jackman) is pretty much spoiled rotten. His owners live in a chic Kensington apartment, and Roddy has everything he could possibly want--except friends and a family. Everything changes for Roddy when his owners go away for a few days and their flat is invaded by a common rat, Sid (Shane Richie). Determined to reclaim his apartment and boot out the intruder, Roddy tries to talk Sid into enjoying the apartment "Jacuzzi," which is actually the toilet. But Sid is smarter than he looks, and soon Roddy is traveling down the pipes out of his sheltered life into a world that he never knew existed.

Emerged in Ratropolis and completely out of his element, Roddy is immediately caught up in an adventure. He meets Rita (Kate Winslet), a street-smart scavenger who travels the sewers by boat looking for riches that will help her care for her parents and multitude of siblings, and hires her to help him get above ground. But the villainous Toad (Ian McKellen) and his rodent henchmen, Spike (Andy Serkis) and Whitey (Bill Nighy), are constant problems. To make matters worse, the Toad is preparing to hatch an evil plot that promises to wipe out all the rats and mice dwelling underground, and he brings in his mercenary Parisian cousin Le Frog (Jean Reno) and his team to help get the job done. This comedy/adventure features first-class animation from the team that created WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT and is voiced by an all-star cast.

Over the Hedge F/S

A ragtag group of forest critters awakes from hibernation to find that their forest has been turned into a suburban housing development in this animated film co-directed by Tim Johnson (ANTZ) and first-timer Karey Kirkpatrick, and based on a comic strip by Michael Fry and T Lewis. Paternal turtle Verne (Gary Shandling) and his makeshift family--spunky skunk Stella (Wanda Sykes), speedy squirrel Hammy (Steve Carrell), dramatic father opossum Ozzie (William Shatner), and his perpetually embarrassed daughter Heather (Avril Lavigne)--are ready to start the annual forage for food when they discover a giant hedge where their forest used to be. Luckily, charming raccoon RJ (Bruce Willis) shows up just in time to teach them about humans and life on the other side of the hedge, and how much food there is to be had.

But what Verne and his pals don?Tt know is that RJ?Ts intentions are not necessarily honorable: this loner needs the food they forage to pay back a large debt to Vincent, a very large, angry bear (Nick Nolte). To make matters more difficult, on the other side of the hedge is Gladys (Allison Janney), the president of the neighborhood homeowner?Ts association, who doesn?Tt take kindly to wild animals. When she calls in the Verminator, Dwayne (Thomas Haden Church), it?Ts all-out war as the animals infiltrate the world of humans. Will the loving forest family emerge victorious, or will the spoils of suburbia run them out of the small patch of land they have left? And will RJ stick by his new family, or just keep looking out for himself? Songs by musician Ben Folds reflect the film?Ts take on the perils of suburbanization without being too preachy.

However when his daughter receives an amulet from a mysterious old woman, Hacker goes blind, forcing he and his family to return to New York. Once there, a wave of supernatural destruction begins, caused by an ancient curse Hacker and his family have carried with them. One of Fulci's last films to have been released in the US, MANHATTAN BABY is a must for fans of "The Godfather of Gore."

Fright

Peter Collinson directed this nasty shocker that stars Susan George as Amanda, a teenage babysitter whose night looking after a couple's son goes horribly wrong. Suspicious from the start because of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd's nervous manner, it isn't long before Amanda is jumping out of her skin every time she sees a shadow. However, the real terror starts when Mrs. Lloyd's psychotic ex-husband shows up, fresh from a mental institution, and tries to break into the house to exact revenge on the wife he hates.
